A Brief Overview of PCOD

Polycystic ovarian disease or PCOD is a hormonal disorder that is characterised by multiple cysts in the ovaries. It has become quite a common problem among women of reproductive age, majorly between 18-45 years. After explaining what is PCOD, the blog further explains details on PCOD problems like causes, symptoms, and treatment of the same. Let us take a look at them.

Causes of PCOD

Talking about the causes of this hormonal disorder, it is yet to be explored and understood. Some possible causes might be :

Genetic factors – it is very likely that women inherit it from parents.

Environmental factors – pollution may be a contributing factor.

Unhealthy lifestyle – it might be linked with bad eating habits and obesity.

Symptoms of PCOD

Women may have one or more than one or all of the below-mentioned symptoms of PCOD.

Menstrual irregularity – infrequent or prolonged menstrual period (amenorrhea), occurring every 2-3 months or more.

Excess androgen (hirsutism) – unusual hair growth on face and body

        Heavy bleeding (menorrhagia)

Infertility – results due to persistent anovulation

        Acne due to excess androgen

Uncontrolled weight gain, especially around the waist area

        Headaches

        Metabolic syndrome

        Gestational diabetes

Acanthosis nigricans – darkening or pigmentation of the skin around the neck area

        Male-pattern baldness

Treatment of PCOD

The treatment of PCOD problems includes making significant changes in lifestyle along with medications. The objective of the treatment focuses on:

        Reducing insulin resistance levels

        Restoring of fertility

        Management of acne breakouts

        Management of hirsutism

        Regularising menstruation

After evaluating the symptoms of PCOD, the doctor may prescribe birth control pills to regularise periods, prevent diabetes, control high cholesterol, increase fertility, and remove or prevent the excess hair growth on body and face.

Besides, the doctor may suggest incorporating physical exercise to maintain healthy BMI and lose weight to minimise any possibilities of cardiovascular risks. To remove unwanted hair, the doctor may even advise going for electrolysis, a procedure that involves using electric current for hair removal.

So, these are some useful information that people need to know about PCOD. To get the right treatment for PCOD, make sure you consider a clinic that has good experience in the same.
